The 2018 BancNet Annual Report marks one of the most significant turning points in the network’s history. This was the year BancNet made a definitive move toward real-time digital payments, laying the groundwork for a faster, more connected financial system that millions of Filipinos would come to rely on in the years ahead.
Beyond its roots as an ATM switch, BancNet had grown in 2018 into a forward-looking payments infrastructure operator, driving the adoption of mobile connectivity, modern switch technology, and automated clearing house implementations across the country. Despite a challenging economic backdrop, the network restored its growth trajectory, a reflection of the strength and scalability built into its core systems.
Here are the defining milestones from the 2018 BancNet annual report:
The Launch of InstaPay: The single biggest milestone of the year came on April 23, 2018, when the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) officially launched InstaPay, with BancNet serving as the foundational clearing switch operator. Designed to let users move money instantly across accounts of participating financial institutions, InstaPay represented a new chapter for digital fund transfers in the Philippines. By the end of the year, the service had already recorded 2.3 million switched transactions, a strong start for what would eventually become one of the most widely used BancNet online payment channels in the country.
A Long-Term Partnership with Vocalink: Looking ahead to the growing demands of digital payments, the BancNet Board entered into a managed service collaboration with Mastercard to integrate Vocalink's real-time payments technology into the network's infrastructure. This was more than a technical upgrade — it was a generational investment in scalability and advanced transaction data capabilities, positioning BancNet to handle the exponential growth in digital payment volumes that lay ahead.
Full EMV Migration, Completed: By October 2018, 100% of ATMs and point-of-sale (POS) terminals on the BancNet network had been certified EMV chip-compliant, bringing a long-running industry migration project to completion. The results were immediate and measurable, with card skimming incidents and transaction fraud dropping significantly across the network.
A Wider Cashless Footprint: Merchant adoption of digital payments continued to grow, with the BancNet network's POS terminal count reaching 270,872 terminals nationwide by year's end. Across those terminals, a total of 58.63 million purchase transactions were processed, reflecting the steady shift toward cashless shopping among Filipino consumers.

Branching Out for Sustainability: PNPI Partners with ISACA Manila for Tree Nurturing Activity
On the morning of June 20, 2026, the lush trails of the La Mesa Ecopark became a vibrant hub of environmental stewardship as volunteers from the Payments Network of the Philippines, Inc. (PNPI) joined forces with the ISACA Manila Chapter for a joint Tree Nurturing Activity.
Representing a powerful intersection of information security, national payments switch leadership and community responsibility, the collaborative event brought together employees and industry professionals who swapped their keyboards and spreadsheets for soil and Kalumpit saplings. The morning was spent actively planting and nurturing native trees, contributing directly to the vital reforestation and watershed protection of Metro Manila’s primary water source.
Beyond the environmental impact, the activity served as a unique, informal venue for the PNPI and ISACA communities to build cross-industry camaraderie. Muddy shoes and shared laughter replaced formal office dynamics, reinforcing both organizations’ commitment to sustainable development and corporate social responsibility (CSR). To wrap up the productive morning, ISACA awarded BancNet a certificate of appreciation, marking a successful day of grounding our corporate values into actual, living roots.
A tree-huge thank you to all the PNPI and ISACA Manila Chapter volunteers who woke up early, stepped out of their comfort zones, and left a lasting, green footprint for the future.
